Understanding The Concept Of ‘Free’.

I love ordering new books, particularly if they are related to internet marketing.  My library is now quite extensive, and it’s always exciting to wait for the next book to drop through my letterbox.

The most recent book I’ve received is ‘Free’ by Chris Anderson.  This morning I scanned through some of the first pages, and what Chris has to say really makes sense.

We’re now living in the ‘bits economy’ as opposed to the ‘atom economy’ of the twentieth century, and attitudes are changing.  People are now expecting more for free.

Just consider your online experiences – so far this morning I’ve used Hotmail (free), Google (free), Linked-in (free) and Scoop-it (free).  The same applies to your website.  Potential customers expect to visit a site and get something for free.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, and I would go so far as to say that this should indeed be ‘quality free’.  On my site I try to develop a range of resources that can be downloaded to enable others to build their web presence.

All of my training videos are free, so are the audio downloads and the newsletters.  I also offer a free eBook ‘Essential Internet Marketing Success Elements’ – this does encourage readers to join my list, but once on the list they will be sent further free resources.

As far as possible my content is original.  Every day I receive offers to put articles and resources produced by other writers up on my site, but I try to resist the temptation to take the easy option.  The same goes for free give-aways.  I could very easily stuff my site with products I have bought the resell rights for, but many other marketers go down this path and nothing is unique.

So consider the concept of ‘free’.  What can you offer visitors to your site that is quality and unique?

Ultimately we are all in the game of selling, but in order to achieve those sales we’ve got to show that we’re not just after the money but are also willing to offer much more in return.  Try to ‘over-deliver’, and do so only using the best materials you can develop yourself.

Don’t forget that it’s all about relationships.  You wouldn’t give your loved ones shoddy presents, so don’t skimp on the stuff you’re giving away to your readers!

Keep dreaming those big dreams!

Graham

p.s. a very simple plug today – why not have a browse through the ‘free’ stuff that I’ve developed?  Just click on the links on the right-hand side of this page and you can download my free videos, newsletters and audio recordings – enjoy!
